Last week, a truck overturned in Madison County and spilled a cleaning agent into Shelton Laurel Creek. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened on Wednesday, on southbound Highway 208. For currently unknown reasons, the large truck overturned beside the roadway. The big rig was hauling a cleaning agent called Megasol at the time of the crash, and it did spill into the waterway. Although emergency management officials reportedly said the cleaning agent isn’t harmful to humans or fish, it is expected to end up in the French Broad River. At this time, we do not know what the long-term environmental impact of the spill will be.

Madison County Truck Crash

Very few details about this crash have been released, including the cause, which is likely still under investigation with local law enforcement officials. The truck driver was injured in the crash, but she is expected to be okay. Local residents in the area are concerned about the safety of eating fish caught from downstream or near the spill area.

Truck Crashes Across the U.S.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2014, 3,903 people were killed in crashes involving large commercial trucking vehicles. Additionally, an estimated 111,000 people were injured in commercial trucking vehicle crashes. Crashes involving large trucks are often devastating for drivers and passengers in smaller cars, SUVs and light trucks. Since these commercial vehicles are so much bigger and heavier than smaller passenger vehicles, trucking drivers and companies have an additional set of federal rules and regulations to follow. These rules also dictate how certain hazardous or potentially combustible materials are handled too.
