Over the weekend, an incident during the White Squirrel Festival in Brevard sent five people to the hospital. According to WLOS ABC News channel 13, a wooden car in the Squirrel Box Derby race veered off course and into the crowd. The wreck happened as racers were going down “Jailhouse Hill” on Broad Street, between Main and French Broad Street.

There has been no word on why the derby car veered into the crowd, but initial reports indicate that mechanical issues may have been involved. One person had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital for treatment of head injuries, and four other people were transported to Transylvania Regional Hospital.
