Madison County residents woke up to slick roads on Monday morning. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, roadways across Hot Springs, Mars Hill and other areas were slick with ice and snow after icy and snowy overnight weather. Thankfully, Madison County DOT crews treated the main roadways overnight. Some of the slickest roads were NC 212 in Shelton Laurel, NC 209 and NC 63 in Hot Springs and Future I-26 in Mars Hill, near the Tennessee line. Officials in the area are urging motorists to exercise additional caution as temperatures continue to drop. Refreezing can also cause roadways to become extremely slippery.

NHTSA’s Winter Driving Safety

In December, we reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Association’s (NHTSA) Winter Driving Safety Tips. Winter driving safety starts with automobile preparation. Making sure your tires are ready for the weather is an incredibly vital part of winter weather safety. It’s also a good idea to check your battery, antifreeze, heaters, defrosters and windshield wipers before the bad weather sets in. As far as driving in snowy or icy conditions goes, the NHTSA recommends slowing down, buckling up and staying home, when you can.

Even though drivers in and around the Asheville area are used to a certain amount of wintry weather every year, it’s still important to prep your car and prepare yourself for winter driving. If your car is new, new to you or you’re new to driving in wintry conditions, it’s also a great idea to familiarize yourself with your braking system.
