The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the agency tasked with regulating the commercial trucking industry. Since commercial trucks are so much larger and heavier than passenger occupant vehicles, they have additional rules and regulations to follow for safe roadway operation. According to the FMCSA, in 2012, 3,802 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes across the nation. This represented a five percent increase from the year before. Additionally, 3.5 percent of large truck drivers involved in fatal crashes had alcohol detected in their blood.
