Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and Buncombe County have been prepping roadways for the impending winter weather. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that thousands of gallons of brine solution have been sprayed onto area interstates in preparation for snow and ice. Officials with NCDOT are hoping this proactive approach will help to keep mountain roads safe during and after any wintry precipitation. Local residents have also been stocking up on shovels and ice melting supplies for their own driveways, sidewalks and walkways.

Staying Safe in Winter Weather

In efforts to improve roadway safety during and after winter wintry weather, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been promoting their “Focus on Safety- Winter Driving” campaign all season. Not only do they have a great checklist for pre-storm vehicle preparation, they also have a variety of great tips for navigating wintry roadways safely. Their interactive Winter Driving Safety website also offers motorists information on what to do in the event of a breakdown or an emergency.

Post-Storm Vehicle Prep

In addition to roadway and pre-weather vehicle prep, it’s also essential to make sure your car or truck is safe to navigate the roadways after a storm. A few weeks ago, we reported on the importance of post-storm vehicle preparation. If you’re only clearing snow and ice from your windshield, you’re not getting the whole job done. After the last big winter storm, officials with the Asheville Police Department were reminding motorists to clear and remove all ice and snow from their cars before getting behind the wheel. A flying chunk of ice or loose clump of snow can endanger the drivers behind you.

After a Car Accident in Asheville

After any type of car accident in or around Asheville, it’s a good idea to speak with a personal injury lawyer about your options. Although wintry weather can add additional time to your commute in prep and drive time, safety on Buncombe County roadways needs to be a top priority for all motorists.
