The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their Road Trip Safety campaign, which includes some very important Summer Driving Safety Tips. Whether you’re hitting the road for a cross-country road trip or simply heading to a national park with your camper, boat or tent, the NHTSA has a lot of good resources to get you ready for your trip. Nothing can negatively impact a carefree summer road trip quicker than mechanical trouble or a car accident, so pre-trip preparation is an essential part of travel planning. Listed below are some of the NHTSA’s Pre-Trip Safety Tips.

Safety Before Your Trip

Get your car serviced.

This can be a tune up, oil change or whatever your car is due for before the trip.

Check your vehicle’s tires.

Is it time for a rotation, balance or replacement?

Make sure all tires are properly inflated.

Check your vehicle for recalls.

Use Safercar.gov’s VIN lookup tool to see if your vehicle is under recall.

Pack a roadside emergency kit.

Include tools, spare tire and other mechanical items that you might need in the event of a break down.

Pack water and non-perishable food items, in case you get stranded for an extended period of time.

Summer Safety on North Carolina Roadways

With everything checked off of your pre-trip safety checklist, you can hit the road with confidence. The NHTSA is also reminding motorists to Share the Road this summer and all yearlong. This means being on the lookout for all roadway users, especially those who are most vulnerable in the event of a wreck, like cyclists, pedestrians and motorcycle riders. Equally important, drivers need to make a commitment to distraction-free driving.
