The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently issued a press release about the results of their 2015 Holiday “Booze It And Lose It” campaign. Like many states and law enforcement agencies across the nation, North Carolina is trying to reduce the number of injury causing and fatal drunk driving crashes that happen each year. Sadly, the holidays are an especially deadly time on North Carolina roadways. During the safety campaign, that ran from December 11, 2015 to January 3, 2016, there were 3,074 charges for DWI. Of those charges, 252 were related to drug use. Almost 350 law enforcement agencies participated statewide.
“Booze It And Lose It” Results
- There were 10,914 checking stations and saturation patrols.
- 105,020 traffic and criminal citations were made.
- On average, there were 128 DWI arrests per day.
- Henderson County had 18 total DWI charges.
Increased Enforcement Efforts in North Carolina
In addition to an increase in law enforcement, the NCDOT also utilized social media and other marketing sources to get the word out about the dangers of drunk driving. Their social media ad “Don’t Drink and Drive. You’re Smarter Than That.” was aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with drunk driving. The campaign also included suggestions for a variety of safe options available to people after a night of celebrations including alcohol.
