On Monday, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Officer was injured when a suspected drunk driver struck his vehicle. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened along the side of Interstate 95 near Fayetteville. At the time of the crash, the trooper was beside I-95 investigating another wreck. The suspected drunk driver slammed into his cruiser, which struck him and tossed him into the air. He landed on his back beside the roadway. The tow truck driver and another driver were also injured in the crash.

Danger for First Responders

At this time, very little information about this wreck has been released, but we do know that the driver was charged with driving under the influence. There has been no word on anybody’s condition or the extent of injuries involved. This wreck is likely still under investigation with law enforcement officials. Impaired, distracted and careless drivers are a serious danger for first responders and other roadway workers. Although many people think that dealing with ‘bad guys’ is one of the most dangerous parts of the job, for many law enforcement officers, the most dangerous threats lurk on roadways.

North Carolina’s Move Over Law

Since 2002, North Carolina has had a Move Over law, which requires motorists to move over a lane for first responders and other roadway workers wish flashing lights. If you can’t move over, you have to slow down. It’s critically important to give first responders and other roadside workers the space they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. Under the North Carolina law, motorists who fail to move over can expect a fine of up to $250.00 and additional court costs. If you were distracted, impaired or if somebody got injured, expect to face additional citations, charges and expenses.
