Over the weekend, there were seven separate multi-vehicle crashes involving a total of 19 vehicles on I-40 East near Canton. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wrecks happened on Saturday afternoon during a rainstorm. Very few details about how these wrecks happened have been released, but we do know that visibility was reportedly reduced in the area due to weather. Initial reports indicate that traffic was slow at the time of the crash. Many of the drivers reported going about 15 miles per hour when the crashes happened.

Semi Truck Involved in I-40 Crash

At least one of the crashes involved a semi-truck rear-ending a smaller passenger occupant vehicle. Several vehicles sustained significant damage. Multiple tow trucks had to be called to the scene to clear the roadway. At this time, no information has been released on what kind of citations or charges have been issued in connection with any of these wrecks. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported on the scene.

Crashes During Bad Weather

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, hazardous weather conditions were a factor in about 21 percent of vehicle crashes between 2007 and 2016. As we transition to cooler and wetter weather, it’s important for drivers in Asheville to be prepared for inclement roadway conditions. Motorists are encouraged to stay on top of tire maintenance and make sure their brakes, windshield wipers and other potential mechanical issues are all addressed before hitting the road. Drivers in Western North Carolina can expect all different kinds of weather from late fall through early spring.

Car Accidents in Asheville

During poor weather conditions, drivers are reminded to slow down and drive carefully. Always remember to adjust your speed to the conditions of the roadway. If visibility is too poor or conditions are really bad, it might be a good idea to pull over in a safe area and wait out the bad weather. After any kind of car accident caused by a dangerous or negligent driver, no matter what kind of weather conditions are present, it’s a good idea to speak with a Personal Injury lawyer about your case.
