Dangers Facing Motorcycle Riders on U.S. Roadways

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 88,000 motorcyclists were injured in crashes in 2015. Without the added safety benefits of larger automobiles, motorcycle riders are still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups. Even with helmets, boots, jackets, gloves and other protective gear, motorcyclists can become catastrophically or even fatally injured in collisions with larger passenger occupant vehicles. Additionally, driving habits like cutting off motorcycles, tailgating, texting and other aggressive and dangerous behaviors make the roadways dangerous places for motorcyclists and other roadway users.

Motorist Awareness of Motorcycles

Due to the increasing epidemic of distracted driving and the ongoing dangers facing motorcycle riders on U.S. roadways everyday, the NHTSA is hoping to improve motorist awareness of motorcycles. Car and truck drivers are reminded to “look twice” before changing lanes or pulling onto roadways. Additionally, motorists need to know that motorcycle riders need more room to maneuver in the event of an emergency. They can’t stop on a dime, and abrupt maneuvers can be dangerous. Finally, drivers and motorcycle riders need to completely refrain from texting or any other types of distractions.
