WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently reported on recommended changes in laws governing bicycle safety in the State of North Carolina. A series of public meetings have culminated in a report with recommendations to the legislature’s transportation committee. Some of those recommendations include requiring reflective clothing and allowing drivers to cross the double-yellow line when passing cyclists.
Cyclist advocacy groups see these potential changes as a bit of a mixed bag. In some cases, these recommendations could actually put bicycle riders in greater danger. The biggest takeaway from the dialogue should be that the issue of cyclist safety is really about all roadway users. Improving safety for bicycle riders is about improving safety for everybody on North Carolina roadways.
