WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently reported on the increase in traffic on North Carolina roadways during the holiday weekend. With many Americans hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend, Asheville and other areas in North Carolina and South Carolina saw an increase in traffic. AAA actually reported that 1.3 million people were planning on driving in North Carolina and an additional more than half a million were going to be hitting the road in South Carolina.

Increase in Traffic in North Carolina and South Carolina

Initial reports indicate that there was a four percent increase in vehicle volume when compared with last year’s holiday weekend. There was also an increase in air travel. Asheville and Myrtle Beach were listed as two of the most popular vacation spots in the nation on Memorial Day weekend. Friday afternoon is typically the busiest travel day of the weekend, as some people go home on Sunday, and some people go home on Monday.

Staying Safe on Summer Time Road Trips

Safety advocates have been urging motorists to buckle up for every trip. Whether you’re traveling across town or across the country, you should buckle up for every trip, every time. Motorists are also being reminded to avoid engaging in any type of distracted behavior behind the wheel. Obviously, this means no texting while driving, but there are a variety of other activities that can be considered distractions too. Reaching for a dropped item, messing with the radio and eating are all forms of distractions.

Drunk Driving Accidents on Holiday Weekends

Unfortunately, holiday weekends are also well known for having an increase in injury-causing and fatal drunk driving accidents. No matter what, never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. Even one drink can be one drink too many.
