Over the weekend, a Macon County Schools activity bus caught fire on the way back from a field trip. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened in Haywood County, on Interstate 40, near Canton. Very few details about this incident have been released, but initial reports indicate that a blown tire may have caused the fire. The driver reportedly heard a popping noise and saw smoke coming from the vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that a tire blowout might have caused damage to the brake lining or brake shoe, causing the tire to catch fire.

Macon County Activity Bus Engulfed in Flames

The driver pulled over, and staff members on the bus were able to evacuate the 12 students and get them to safety. The bus became fully engulfed in flames, and first responders rushed to the scene. Traffic in the area was slowed down for a significant portion of time as crews and first responders worked the scene. Officials report that the bus was inspected within the last 30 days, but the investigation is still ongoing. Thankfully, no injuries were reported on the scene.

Tire Safety on Activity Buses and Vans

Tire safety is critically important on activity buses and vans. Activity vehicles aren’t always used daily like school buses or other vehicles. They can often have sporadic use and different or unfamiliar drivers. A tire blowout on a large vehicle can cause a variety of serious safety concerns. Vehicles with high centers of gravity, like buses and vans, might be more likely to flip or rollover in the event of a blowout. Steering and brakes can be compromised during a blowout. Ensuring tires are properly inflated and roadworthy for every trip is essential for occupant safety.
