At least 22 people had to be transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, and one person had to be airlifted. This bus crash is still under investigation with law enforcement officials.

Bus Crashes by The Numbers

On average, from 2006 to 2016, intercity buses accounted for 13 percent of all buses involved in fatal crashes.

During that time period, school buses and transit buses accounted for 40 percent and 34 percent, respectively, of all buses involved in fatal crashes.

From 2015 to 2016, the number of buses involved in fatal crashes decreased from 263 to 227 (14 percent).

Risk Factors Associated With Bus Crash Severity

Research shows that there are a variety of risk factors associated with bus crash severity. According to a 2012 study, bus crash severity increases when there are young bus drivers under the age of 25 behind the wheel, older drivers who are over 55 years old, and most prominently for drivers over 65 years old. A few other factors include very high-speed limits (over 65 miles per hour), and very low speed limits (under 20 miles per hour). Another common risk factor is inattentive and risky driving.
