A recent press release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) outlines the importance of 15-passenger van safety and maintenance this summer. Summer camps, church groups, youth clubs and other organizations frequently use 15-passenger vans to transport children and adults. The NHTSA wants to remind owners and operators of 15-passenger vans that they do carry some additional safety risks to be aware of.

Between 2004 and 2013, 653 people were killed in 15-passenger van crashes. Due to their design, they’re at a higher risk of rollover in the event of a tire blowout or similar problem. The NHTSA is urging drivers of 15-passenger vans to check the tires before every trip. Make sure they’re properly inflated and check for signs of wear. Additionally, everybody needs to buckle up, for every trip.
